TradingView Free for AI Trading — Complete Guide

By Dan Machado · 8 min read

TradingView is the de facto standard charting platform for retail traders worldwide. The free tier gets you 95% of what you need — assuming you know what’s actually free and what isn’t. This guide breaks down the free tier limits, what you can do, and how SA traders should configure it for AI-assisted trading on Deriv and other brokers.

🎯 What You’ll Set Up

By the end: free TradingView account, charts configured for V75/forex, 3 indicators stacked, working alert, and a Pine Editor with your first AI-generated script. Total time: ~20 minutes.

⚠️ V75 Limitation

TradingView does NOT have Deriv’s synthetic indices natively. To chart V75: use USTECH100 or NDQ100 as rough proxies, or use Deriv’s built-in DTrader charts which include synthetics. Most SA AI traders use TradingView for forex and stocks, Deriv DTrader for synthetic charts.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Create Free Account

  1. Go to tradingview.com
  2. Click “Get Started” — sign up with email or Google
  3. Skip the paid plan prompt — choose “Continue with Free”
  4. Confirm email — instant access

Step 2: Open Your First Chart

  1. Click “Products” → “Supercharts”
  2. Search asset: type EURUSD or USDZAR for forex
  3. Set timeframe (top left): start with 1H (1-hour candles)
  4. Chart loads with candlesticks by default

Step 3: Add 3 Indicators (Max on Free Tier)

Recommended combo for V75/forex:

  1. Click “Indicators” button (top toolbar)
  2. Add RSI — appears in separate pane below
  3. Add EMA — change period to 21 in settings
  4. Add Bollinger Bands — default 20-period

That’s your 3 indicators. For a 4th, you need Pro plan. Or use Pine Editor to combine 2 indicators into one (workaround).

Step 4: Set Up Your 1 Free Alert

Free tier allows 1 active alert. Use it wisely:

  1. Right-click anywhere on chart → “Add Alert”
  2. Condition: RSI < 30 (oversold)
  3. Trigger: Once per bar close (not intra-bar)
  4. Notification: email + popup (web)
  5. Message: “RSI oversold on {{ticker}} {{interval}}”
  6. Save

Step 5: Try the Pine Editor

This is where AI-generated indicators get pasted:

  1. Bottom of chart → click “Pine Editor” tab
  2. Click “Open” → “New default indicator” — see basic template
  3. Replace code with AI-generated Pine v5 script (see our ChatGPT & Claude tutorial)
  4. Click “Save” → name it
  5. Click “Add to Chart”

Maximising the 3-Indicator Limit

💡 Pine Editor Trick

You can combine multiple indicators into ONE custom Pine Script. This counts as 1 indicator slot. Example: a single script with RSI + Stoch + MACD takes 1 slot instead of 3. Ask AI: “Combine RSI(14), Stochastic(14,3,3), and MACD(12,26,9) into one indicator script with 3 plots in same pane.”

Backtesting on Strategy Tester

This is fully unlocked on free tier (most underrated feature):

  1. Pine Editor → paste a strategy script (not indicator — must use strategy())
  2. Save and add to chart
  3. Bottom panel: “Strategy Tester” tab
  4. See: Net Profit, Win Rate, Profit Factor, Max Drawdown
  5. Change asset/timeframe to test different conditions

Detailed walkthrough: Backtesting Guide.

SA-Specific Setup

USD/ZAR for Local Context

  • Search: USDZAR in TradingView
  • Set timezone: top of chart → “GMT+2” (SAST)
  • Watch correlations with: gold (XAU/USD), JSE Top 40 (JSE:J200), Brent oil

JSE Stocks

Many JSE-listed companies appear:

  • Naspers: JSE:NPN
  • Sasol: JSE:SOL
  • Prosus: JSE:PRX
  • Anglo American: JSE:AGL
  • JSE Top 40 index: JSE:J200

Use these for chart practice. Cannot trade them directly on TradingView (use EasyEquities or Standard Bank Online Share Trading for actual JSE execution).

When to Upgrade to Pro

Free tier covers most SA AI traders. Upgrade ($14/mo, ~R260) makes sense when:

  • You actively monitor 3+ assets and need 5+ indicators
  • You need 10+ active alerts (more than 1)
  • You want server-side alerts (work even when computer is off)
  • Ads bother you significantly
  • You need multi-chart layout (compare side-by-side)

Free TradingView Alternatives

  • Deriv DTrader — free, has V75 synthetics, simpler interface
  • Investing.com Charts — free, has SA stocks, fewer indicators
  • MetaTrader 5 (Deriv MT5) — free, designed for forex/CFDs
  • EasyEquities Chart — basic, but native ZAR for JSE stocks

Use TradingView for analysis, Deriv DTrader for execution. Standard SA setup.
